Now a broad label put on efforts by editors and news directors to try to do their jobs as journalists in ways that help to overcome people’s sense of powerlessness and alienation. The goal is to produce news that citizens need to be educated about issues and current events, to make civic decisions, to engage in dialogue and action – and generally to exercise their responsibilities in a self-governing society.
The Pew Center for Civic Journalism was created by The Pew Charitable Trusts to help news organizations experiment with ways to do this. The definitions of civic journalism in this booklet demonstrate how journalists are actively working to improve their news coverage by involving citizens and how they are working to improve their community with their journalism.
